At least six people lost their lives and more than 30 sustained injuries in a powerful suicide blast outside Shahwani Stadium in Quetta on Tuesday, police and rescue officials confirmed. The deadly attack once again highlighted the fragile security situation in Balochistanโs provincial capital.
According to police accounts, the suicide bomber detonated explosives near a cluster of parked vehicles outside the stadium premises. The force of the explosion ripped through several cars, leaving behind a trail of destruction and panic. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos as people scrambled to safety amid rising smoke and scattered debris.
Sources from the Balochistan National Party (BNP) revealed that the explosion occurred just moments after party chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal exited the stadium. Mengal narrowly escaped unharmed, though the attack is believed to have been aimed at creating maximum casualties and spreading fear.
Rescue operations and investigation
Rescue teams promptly rushed to the scene and transported the injured to Civil Hospital and Bolan Medical Complex. Hospital authorities confirmed that several victims remain in critical condition, with doctors and paramedics working tirelessly to save lives.
Law enforcement agencies swiftly cordoned off the site, restricting access as bomb disposal experts and forensic teams began evidence collection. Investigators confirmed that body parts of the suspected bomber have been recovered and will be analyzed to establish identity and affiliations.
The Balochistan Home Department has announced a high-level probe into the incident, while security forces launched search operations in surrounding areas to track possible facilitators.
Government reaction
Condemning the incident, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti described the blast as a โcowardly act by enemies of humanity.โ He emphasized that terrorists spilling innocent blood would never succeed in their โnefarious designs.โ Bugti directed hospitals to remain on high alert and ensure the best possible care for the injured.
The chief minister also announced the formation of a special committee to investigate the bombing, with orders to submit a report without delay. โThe perpetrators will be brought to justice. Protecting the lives and property of citizens remains the governmentโs foremost priority,โ Bugti affirmed, stressing that provincial and federal authorities will coordinate closely to strengthen security in the province.
