The federal government on Tuesday announced a public holiday on September 6 in observance of Eid-i-Miladun Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). The official notification was issued by the Cabinet Division, confirming that all government offices, institutions, and organizations will remain closed on the day.
The announcement follows the decision of the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee, which last week declared that the Rabiul Awwal moon had not been sighted. As a result, Eid-i-Miladun Nabi is scheduled to be observed on the upcoming Saturday.
Muslims across Pakistan, as well as around the world, celebrate this significant religious occasion, known in Arabic as Mawlid al-Nabawi, on the 12th of Rabiul Awwal — the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The day is marked with various religious and cultural activities, including congregational prayers, recitations of the Quran, and special gatherings to honor the life and teachings of the Prophet.
Eid-i-Miladun Nabi holds great spiritual significance for Muslims, who use the occasion to reflect upon the principles of compassion, humility, and service to humanity exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Public celebrations often include processions, educational seminars, and charity activities, emphasizing the values of kindness and community welfare.
September 6 is also significant for Pakistan as the nation will commemorate its 60th Defence Day, remembering the sacrifices of the country’s armed forces during the 1965 war against India.
On this day, military parades, ceremonies, and tributes are held nationwide to honor the courage and dedication of soldiers who defended the country. The coincidence of Eid-i-Miladun Nabi and Defence Day this year provides an opportunity for Pakistanis to celebrate both spiritual devotion and national pride.
With the official public holiday in place, citizens are advised to plan accordingly, while government departments and organizations will observe closures. The day will be marked with religious observances, patriotic ceremonies, and nationwide reflection on both spiritual and historical milestones.
