Relief for Flood-Affected Residents
The federal government extended the electricity bill payment deadline for citizens living in flood-hit regions. The decision came as part of relief measures aimed at easing financial burdens during the crisis.
Energy Minister’s Statement
Federal Minister for Energy, Awais Leghari, announced the extension, stressing the government’s commitment to supporting disaster-struck communities. He explained that electricity supply would remain suspended in heavily affected zones until public safety was assured.
Ensuring Public Safety First
According to the minister, the suspension was necessary to protect lives from accidents caused by damaged infrastructure. He emphasized that restoring power prematurely could endanger residents. Technical teams will conduct safety checks before gradually reconnecting affected areas.
Refund of Overbilling
Leghari highlighted that the current government had already refunded Rs100 billion to consumers for last year’s overbilling. He clarified that no additional overbilling was taking place, dismissing public concerns about inflated bills.
Tariff Reductions Announced
The minister further revealed that electricity tariffs had been reduced to ease consumer hardships. He claimed the power sector had returned to the “right track” after reforms introduced in recent months.
Balancing Crisis Management with Reform
The government aims to balance immediate relief with long-term restructuring of the power sector. By extending deadlines and reducing tariffs, Islamabad seeks to rebuild public trust while maintaining financial stability in the energy system.

A beautiful smokescreen was created in 1945: the United Nations (UN). It was heralded as an institution whose primary purpose was to prevent wars from breaking out worldwide. Undoubtedly, establishing such a body after World War II was the most sensible decision for maintaining global stability. Over the years, the UN gained more influence, and in 2015, it introduced the concept of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Heralded as “peace harbingers,” the SDGs were the logical next step in prolonging the life of our planet. These 17 goals formed a roadmap to tackle humanity’s most pressing challenges—from poverty and inequality to climate change. The target was set for 2030, but as that deadline approaches, the SDGs now seem more like a distant dream than a hopeful reality.
