The Punjabi film industry is in mourning following the sudden demise of veteran actor and comedian Jaswinder Bhalla, who passed away at the age of 65 in the early hours of August 22. He breathed his last at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and countless memories. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed. According to reports, his last rites will be performed on August 23 at 12 noon at the Balongi cremation ground in Mohali. A large number of family members, friends, colleagues, and admirers from the Punjabi film and entertainment industry are expected to attend to bid him a final farewell.
Jaswinder Bhalla was one of the most beloved figures in Punjabi cinema and theatre. Known for his sharp wit, impeccable timing, and memorable punchlines, he carved a permanent place in the hearts of audiences. He first gained recognition in the late 1980s and early 1990s with his immensely popular comedy audio series Chhankata, which brought his humor to households across Punjab. His journey on the big screen began with the 2002 film Dulla Bhatti. From there, Bhalla never looked back, going on to deliver several hit performances in films such as Carry On Jatta, Jatt and Juliet, Mr & Mrs 420, Vadhayiyaan Ji Vadhayiyaan, and Sardaar Ji 2. His last appearance was in the 2024 film Shinda Shinda No Papa, alongside Gippy Grewal and Hina Khan.
The news of his passing has left fans heartbroken, with social media platforms flooded with tributes. Politicians and celebrities also joined in expressing their grief. Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, in a heartfelt post, wrote, “The stage of Punjabi laughter stands silent & empty today… Jaswinder Bhalla ji was a living symbol of Punjabi wit, humour and spirit. With his unmatched talent, he turned simplicity into laughter and made generations smile. Waheguru ji bless his noble soul with peace.”
Bhalla’s demise marks the end of an era in Punjabi comedy, but his legacy of laughter and joy will continue to live on through his timeless performances.
