In the much-anticipated film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a major revelation has thrilled fans of the franchise. Legendary actor Sir Ian McKellen, best known for his portrayal of the wise wizard Gandalf, confirmed during the For Love of Fantasy event in London that audiences will once again see a familiar face from Middle-earth โ Frodo.
The announcement came during a special panel dedicated to the Lord of the Rings universe, where McKellen shared insights into the upcoming project, which will focus primarily on Andy Serkisโ iconic character, Gollum. The film, set to begin production in May, will be directed by Serkis himself, adding an extra layer of intrigue and excitement for fans eager to see the story told from Gollumโs perspective.
โI hear thereโs going to be another movie set in Middle-earth, and itโs going to start filming in May,โ McKellen revealed. โItโs going to be directed by Gollum, and itโs all about Gollum. Iโll tell you two secrets about the casting: thereโs a character in the movie called Frodo, and thereโs another character called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed!โ
While McKellenโs comments confirmed the presence of both Frodo and Gandalf in the upcoming film, he left fans wondering whether Elijah Wood and himself would reprise their iconic roles.
The veteran actor deliberately kept this part vague, though the presence of Elijah Wood, who played Frodo in the original trilogy, at the same panel has only fueled speculation that he may indeed be returning.
McKellen, now 86, has also hinted in the past that he remains open to reprising Gandalf, provided his health allows. In a previous interview with the BBC, he expressed his dedication to the craft, stating, โI shall just keep at it as long as the legs and the lungs and the mind keep working.โ
With The Hunt for Gollum set for release in December 2027, the news has reignited excitement among Lord of the Rings fans worldwide.
The prospect of Frodo and Gandalfโs return, combined with a story centered on one of Tolkienโs most complex characters, promises a film that could both expand and deepen the beloved cinematic universe of Middle-earth.
