Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that Australia will recognise the State of Palestine at next month’s 80th United Nations General Assembly, joining a wave of nations — including France, Britain, and Canada — that have recently taken the same step.
Speaking in Canberra on Monday following a cabinet meeting, Albanese said the decision aims to bolster international momentum towards a two-state solution, a ceasefire in Gaza, and the release of hostages. He stressed that recognition would be contingent on assurances from the Palestinian Authority that Islamist militant group Hamas would have no role in a future Palestinian state.
“A two-state solution is humanity’s best hope to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East and to end the conflict, suffering, and starvation in Gaza,” Albanese told reporters, adding that a political resolution — not a military one — was the only viable path forward. He said he had conveyed this message directly to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a call last week.
The move comes as Australia intensifies its criticism of Israel’s handling of the Gaza conflict. In a joint statement with Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Albanese accused Netanyahu’s government of undermining peace prospects by expanding illegal settlements, threatening annexation of Palestinian territories, and rejecting the idea of a Palestinian state.
Albanese said commitments by the Palestinian Authority to reform governance, demilitarise, hold general elections, and meet Arab League demands for Hamas to relinquish control of Gaza presented an opportunity to isolate Hamas and advance peace efforts.
Meanwhile, in New Zealand, Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced that his country is considering recognition of a Palestinian state. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s cabinet will make a formal decision in September and present its stance at the UN Leaders’ Week. Peters said Wellington would “carefully weigh up its position over the next month.”
