Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has vowed that Pakistan will never allow India to choke the Indus River, warning that any controversial dam built by New Delhi could be destroyed to safeguard the country’s water rights.
“We will wait for India to build a dam, and when they do so, we will destroy it,” he told members of the Pakistani-American community in Tampa, Florida. “The Indus River is not India’s family property. We have ample resources to counter any designs aimed at blocking our water.”
Field Marshal Munir’s remarks came during his second high-profile visit to the United States in less than two months. Over the weekend, he visited two American cities before travelling to Brussels, Belgium, for further engagements.
Military Engagements in Tampa
In Tampa, the army chief attended the US Central Command (CENTCOM) change-of-command ceremony, marking the retirement of General Michael E. Kurilla and the assumption of command by Admiral Brad Cooper. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), he praised Gen Kurilla for his “exemplary leadership” in strengthening Pakistan-US military ties and expressed confidence that Admiral Cooper would advance this partnership to meet shared security challenges.
On the sidelines, FM Munir met US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine and chiefs of defence from allied nations, inviting Gen Caine to visit Pakistan and reaffirming Islamabad’s role as a key regional security player.
Outreach to Pakistani Diaspora
Later, at a formal dinner hosted by Pakistan’s honorary consul in Tampa, Adnan Asad, and attended by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Ambassador Rizwan Shaikh, embassy officials, and over 150 prominent community members, Munir lauded overseas Pakistanis as “a source of dignity and pride” and “a brain gain, not a brain drain.”
He urged the diaspora to stay optimistic about Pakistan’s future and actively promote investment in sectors such as mineral resources, energy, and emerging technologies. Highlighting that 64 percent of Pakistan’s population is under 30, he stressed the youth’s critical role in shaping the nation’s destiny.
Criticism of India’s Actions
Munir accused India of projecting itself as a “Vishwa Guru” while its intelligence agency, RAW, was allegedly involved in transnational terrorism — citing incidents in Canada, Qatar, and the arrest of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav. He denounced “unprovoked aggression” along the Line of Control, mocked New Delhi’s reluctance to acknowledge battlefield losses in the recent four-day conflict, and reaffirmed that Kashmir is “not India’s internal matter but an unfinished international agenda” requiring UN resolution.
He also thanked former US President Donald Trump for his “strategic leadership” in averting an India-Pakistan war and other global crises.
Calling his visit a “new chapter” in Pakistan-US relations, Munir underscored prospects for major investments from the US, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and China, signalling a push for long-term, constructive partnerships.
