ISLAMABAD: The National Engineering Services Pakistan (Nespak) disclosed on Friday that the collapse of a tunnel at the Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project resulted in a staggering Rs 35 billion in physical damage and more than Rs 100 billion in losses from the cessation of power generation.
During a briefing before the Senate Standing Committee on the Cabinet Secretariat, chaired by Rana Mahmood ul Hassan, Nespak officials revealed that three separate inquiry committees have been constituted to investigate the incident. The collapse occurred approximately 5.5 km underground, and officials are still determining whether the failure was due to geological faults or consultant errors.
In the same session, Nespak’s managing director highlighted the organization’s accomplishments over the past three years, reporting engagement in 4,822 projects, both domestically and internationally. Notably, 595 projects have been completed across 40 countries, including Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bangladesh, and more. The committee postponed further discussion, ordering a detailed list of Nespak’s ongoing projects for review at the next meeting.
