ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis has disclosed that 21,406 Pakistani nationals are currently imprisoned in 61 countries.
The report also highlights data gaps, noting that 14 Pakistani embassies have yet to submit complete information, suggesting the actual number could be higher, according to Pro Pakistani report published today.
Among the countries that did provide data, Saudi Arabia reported the highest number of incarcerated Pakistanis at 10,423, followed by the United Arab Emirates with 5,297, and Turkey with 1,437.
Other notable figures include:
- India: 738
- Oman: 578
- Malaysia: 463
- Qatar: 422
- Sri Lanka: 112
- Afghanistan: 85
- South Africa: 75
In Western countries, the numbers are relatively lower:
- United States: 65 (including Dr. Aafia Siddiqui)
- United Kingdom: 23
- Australia: 27
- Spain: 42
Several countries reported only a handful of Pakistani prisoners:
- Nepal: 19
- Bulgaria: 11
- Denmark: 21
- Iran: 4
- Iraq: 40
- Bangladesh: 1
A number of countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Ghana, Morocco, Myanmar, New Zealand, Rwanda, Senegal, and Singapore, reported no Pakistani prisoners.
In some instances, data was incomplete or withheld. France cited local privacy laws as a reason for not sharing prisoner data, while Japan reported 16 Pakistani detainees but withheld details on six of them.
The Ministry added that many of the imprisoned Pakistanis, particularly in Saudi Arabia, are incarcerated simply because they cannot afford to pay fines, highlighting a need for increased consular support and financial assistance.
