Citizens across Pakistan are in for a welcome break this month, with four consecutive holidays expected from August 14 to 17, thanks to a combination of national observances and the weekend.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, Thursday, August 14 will be observed as a public holiday to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day. The day is celebrated nationwide with flag hoisting ceremonies, parades, and patriotic events honoring the country’s founding.
The very next day, Friday, August 15, marks the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) — the 40th day after Ashura — commemorated by Shia Muslims with mourning processions and religious gatherings in remembrance of the martyrs of Karbala.
While Chehlum is not listed as a federal holiday in the 2025 calendar, provincial and local governments in major cities are expected to announce public holidays for the occasion. Last year, cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi declared local holidays for Chehlum, and similar announcements are anticipated again this year.
Combined with the regular Saturday and Sunday weekend (August 16–17), the two midweek observances could provide a rare four-day holiday stretch, giving families across the country an opportunity to travel, rest, or participate in religious and national activities.
Security Measures and Celebrations
In preparation for both events, federal and provincial authorities have been directed to tighten security, especially in areas where large gatherings and processions are expected. Police and law enforcement agencies will be on high alert to ensure peaceful observances.
This extended break offers not only a chance for reflection and celebration but also a welcome respite from the daily grind for many working Pakistanis.
