ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly of Pakistan on Tuesday unanimously passed a strongly worded resolution condemning India’s unilateral and unconstitutional measures of August 5, 2019, in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The resolution was presented by Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Amir Maqam.
In the resolution, the lower house of Parliament rejected India’s illegal and arbitrary revocation of Article 370 and Article 35A of its constitution—moves that stripped the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir of its limited autonomy.
These measures, according to the resolution, were a direct violation of several United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and contrary to international law, particularly the Geneva Conventions.
The National Assembly reaffirmed its complete and unwavering solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their just and legitimate struggle for the right to self-determination. Lawmakers emphasized that the aspirations of the Kashmiri people cannot be suppressed through force, demographic engineering, or legislative manipulations.
The resolution categorically rejected all Indian domestic laws, amendments, and policies enacted to alter the demographic composition and political status of the disputed region. It warned that such actions not only undermine regional stability but also pose a serious threat to international peace and security.
Members of the Assembly paid glowing tribute to the resilience, sacrifices, and indomitable spirit of the Kashmiri people who continue to endure severe repression, including arbitrary arrests, custodial torture, and media blackouts. The House also condemned the massive deployment of Indian troops in the region and the use of excessive force against innocent civilians.
In a clear call to the international community, the resolution urged global powers and human rights organizations to take immediate cognizance of the situation in IIOJK. It also demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners, journalists, and human rights defenders detained in Indian custody.
Parliamentarians reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering diplomatic, moral, and political support for the Kashmiri people and vowed to continue raising the Kashmir issue at every global forum until justice is served and their right to self-determination is realized.
