A senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized India for continuing to buy oil from Russia, accusing New Delhi of indirectly financing Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
Speaking on Fox News Sunday Morning Futures, Trump’s deputy chief of staff and influential aide Stephen Miller said, “What President Trump made very clear is that it is unacceptable for India to continue financing this war by purchasing oil from Russia.”
Miller’s remarks mark one of the strongest public rebukes of India by the Trump camp—a notable stance given the strategic partnership between Washington and New Delhi in the Indo-Pacific region.
“People will be shocked to learn that India is essentially tied with China in buying Russian oil. That’s an astonishing fact,” Miller added.
The Indian Embassy in Washington did not immediately issue a response to the accusations.
The comments came as tensions rise over New Delhi’s energy and defense ties with Moscow. According to Indian government sources quoted by Reuters, India plans to continue oil imports from Russia despite U.S. pressure.
As part of the growing standoff, the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on certain Indian goods last Friday, citing India’s continued procurement of Russian military and energy supplies. Trump has also floated the possibility of imposing 100% tariffs on imports from countries that persist in buying Russian oil—unless Moscow agrees to a major peace deal in Ukraine.
However, Miller sought to balance the criticism by emphasizing Trump’s personal rapport with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling their relationship “tremendous.”
Meanwhile, the issue remains a flashpoint in U.S.-India relations as global power dynamics shift amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
