LAKKI MARWAT – A heart-wrenching tragedy struck the Langerkhel Surband area of Lakki Marwat district on Saturday morning, when five children lost their lives and 13 others were injured in a powerful explosion caused by an old, unexploded mortar shell.
According to police officials, the children had discovered the unexploded shell while playing in the fields. They brought it back to their village, unaware of its danger. The shell detonated near a rainwater tank as they continued to play, resulting in a deadly blast that killed five children, all aged between eight and twelve.
The deceased were identified as Zenat Bibi (daughter of Jhang Khan), Shaila Bibi and Muzammil (children of Naimatullah), Rafiullah (son of Fatehullah), and Palwasha (daughter of Bankhan). All were residents of Wanda Langerkhel Surband.
The blast also injured 13 people, including children and two women. The injured were named as Luqman, Bilal, Shadan, Latifa Bibi, Mohsin, Fawad, Jamshed, Wajeeh, Riffat, Mumtaz Bibi (wife of Bankhan), Fatima Bibi (wife of Sattar), Ahmad, and Saqib.
ASI Zafar Mehmood from Lakki City police post said his team was on patrol when they received reports of the explosion. They immediately rushed to the scene and helped transfer victims to the hospital.
One Dead, Two Injured in Quadcopter Strike in Nearby Village
In a separate incident the same day, a man was killed and two women were injured in the Shaikh Khula area when an explosive device was dropped by a quadcopter onto a residential home.
Police confirmed that Azizullah, aged 54, died on the spot. His wife, Shaikhzad Bibi, 50, and daughter-in-law, Raj Bibi, 22, sustained injuries in the blast. According to Saadullah, Azizullah’s son, the quadcopter dropped the device directly onto their house, resulting in the deadly explosion.
Villagers rushed the injured to a nearby hospital. Police have registered cases under relevant legal provisions and launched an investigation into both incidents.
