Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Lahore on Saturday for a two-day official visit to Pakistan, accompanied by a high-level delegation including senior ministers and other top officials. This visit marks Pezeshkianโs first official trip to Pakistan since assuming the presidency of Iran.
During his stay, President Pezeshkian is scheduled to meet with Pakistanโs President Asif Ali Zardari and hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
These meetings are expected to focus on strengthening the already brotherly relations between the two neighboring countries. The visit is seen as a significant step in further enhancing political, economic, cultural, and religious ties.
According to Mehdi Sanai, the Political Adviser to the Iranian President, the itinerary includes official meetings as well as discussions with cultural and business elites.
Sanai emphasized that the relationship between Pakistan and Iran covers multiple dimensions, ranging from political cooperation to economic development, and cultural exchanges. He also highlighted efforts to enhance provincial and border cooperation and to increase bilateral trade, which currently stands at around $3 billion.
President Pezeshkianโs visit follows closely after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharifโs visit to Iran in May 2024, where he met with Iranโs Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
This visit by Pezeshkian is the second by an Iranian president to Pakistan in just two years, reflecting the importance both countries place on their relationship. The visit was initially planned for the final week of July but was rescheduled.
In April 2024, Ebrahim Raisi had also paid a three-day official visit to Pakistan shortly before his tragic death in a helicopter crash. During these recent visits, discussions centered on enhancing trade, promoting regional connectivity, and addressing broader regional issues.
Both Pakistan and Iran expressed a shared commitment to peace and stability, with particular concern over the ongoing Zionist oppression in Gaza, calling for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire.
Prime Minister Shehbazโs regional tour, including his visit to Iran, was also aimed at expressing gratitude for the support extended by neighboring countries during the conflict with India. The two-day visit by President Pezeshkian is expected to build on these discussions, further solidifying strategic ties and expanding cooperation between Pakistan and Iran across various sectors.
