KARACHI: Pakistan’s Under-19 men’s volleyball team continued its commanding march at the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, clinching a fourth consecutive win with an emphatic straight-sets triumph over Puerto Rico.
The Pakistani side displayed yet another masterclass in consistency and control, defeating their Latin American opponents 25-20, 25-20, 25-15 in a match that highlighted their growing stature on the international stage.
With this victory, Pakistan not only maintained its undefeated streak but also kept its impressive record of not dropping a single set so far in the tournament. The result strengthens Pakistan’s position at the top of the group standings and ensures their progression to the knockout stage, regardless of the outcome of their final group match against Argentina.
Ranked 19th in the world youth rankings, Pakistan entered the match as the underdogs against 13th-ranked Puerto Rico, but the Green Shirts once again punched above their weight. The team dominated nearly every aspect of the game, particularly in attack, where they racked up 40 points to Puerto Rico’s 30.
Yahya stood out as the star performer, delivering an outstanding personal tally of 22 points — 20 of them from attacks, supplemented by a block and an ace. He received valuable support from teammates Ajmal and Saud, who contributed seven and six points respectively. Saud, in particular, was instrumental at the net with his blocking prowess.
Pakistan’s defensive setup was equally formidable. The team registered 62 successful receptions and 54 digs, minimizing the impact of Puerto Rico’s offensive efforts and maintaining control of the tempo. In service, Pakistan also had the edge, scoring three direct points and forcing 24 service errors from the opposition — a key factor in maintaining scoreboard pressure throughout the match.
Puerto Rico, despite their higher ranking, struggled to find rhythm against Pakistan’s relentless and disciplined gameplay. Their 17 attack faults and inability to handle Pakistan’s strong reception line proved costly.
This comprehensive performance cements Pakistan’s status as one of the most consistent and promising teams in the championship. The final group-stage match against Argentina will serve as an opportunity to test their mettle against a formidable South American opponent, but with four wins under their belt and sky-high confidence, Pakistan looks poised to make a deep run in the tournament’s knockout rounds.
The team’s excellent chemistry, tactical execution, and hunger for victory have not only surprised international observers but also raised expectations back home. With their eyes set firmly on the championship title, the young spikers of Pakistan are making headlines — and history — in Tashkent.
