Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has threatened to launch a new political party in the U.S., warning that he will form what he calls the “America Party” if Congress passes a sweeping domestic spending bill backed by President Donald Trump.
In a series of posts on his social media platform X, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO slammed the bill as “insane spending,” criticizing the legislation for potentially adding a record $5 trillion to the national debt.
Musk accused both major U.S. parties of acting as a unified political establishment, referring to them as a “Democrat-Republican uniparty.” “It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill… that we live in a one-party country — the PORKY PIG PARTY!!” he wrote, mocking the bill’s bloated expenditures.
“Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people,” Musk declared, signaling a major political pivot from one of the GOP’s previously vocal supporters.
The bill, which faces a tight July 4 deadline in the Senate, includes significant tax breaks, infrastructure subsidies, and increases in defense spending. While Democrats have raised concerns, Musk’s public opposition marks a growing rift within Republican ranks — especially given his influence as one of the party’s largest donors and public allies.
Musk, once closely aligned with Trump’s administration, has recently turned into a critic, especially over economic and regulatory policies. As the bill nears passage, Musk intensified his criticism. “If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day,” he posted. “Our country needs an alternative… so that the people actually have a VOICE.”
He even issued a direct warning to GOP lawmakers: “They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”
The White House responded by downplaying Musk’s outrage, hinting that his opposition may be tied to the bill’s planned phase-out of electric vehicle subsidies — a critical issue for Tesla’s business.
Trump, for his part, appeared to strike a conciliatory tone. “I think Elon is a wonderful guy, and I know he’s going to do well, always. He’s a smart guy,” he told Fox News over the weekend.
