The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen, with infants facing life-threatening conditions as the price of baby formula skyrockets amid extreme shortages. Laila al-Shana, project manager for the NGO Humans To Be, described the dire situation from the Bureij refugee camp, where essential infant supplies — including food, fruits, vegetables, and even medicine — are almost completely unavailable.
“There is no food for infants like fruits or vegetables or even medicines for them,” al-Shana said in a recent media interview. She revealed that the cost of baby formula has surged to nearly $100 per can, making it unaffordable for most families.
“I can’t buy it for my children, so I’m very afraid for them. … It’s like it’s threatening the lives of infants all around Gaza,” she added, voicing the desperation of many parents across the besieged territory.
Al-Shana, whose work focused on providing psychological support to children, said she has had to pause those efforts. “I stopped … because the most important thing before making psychological decisions … is they should have food. That is a priority,” she explained.
As the blockade continues and aid supplies remain scarce, the survival of Gaza’s youngest and most vulnerable hangs in the balance.
