The federal government has announced a significant expansion of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) in its upcoming fiscal year budget, with plans to increase funding byย 21%ย toย Rs716 billion.
The enhanced budget will allow BISP to extend its Kafalat Programme to 10 million households, providing direct financial assistance to more low-income families across Pakistan. Additionally, the Educational Stipends Programme will be expanded to support 12 million children, ensuring greater access to education for underprivileged students.
The move is part of the governmentโs broader efforts to strengthen social safety nets and reduce poverty. Officials emphasized that the increased funding will help mitigate economic hardships faced by vulnerable populations, particularly amid rising inflation and unemployment.
“The expansion of BISP reflects our commitment to inclusive growth and social welfare,” said a government spokesperson. “By increasing the reach of Kafalat and educational stipends, we aim to empower more families and children, enabling them to break the cycle of poverty.”
The proposed budget hike comes as Pakistan continues to face economic challenges, with rising living costs putting additional strain on low-income households. Analysts suggest that the enhanced social protection measures could help stabilize household incomes and stimulate local economies.
The government is also expected to introduce stricter monitoring mechanisms to ensure transparency in BISP disbursements, preventing misuse of funds and ensuring aid reaches deserving beneficiaries.
