ISLAMABAD: As part of ongoing counter-terrorism efforts, Pakistani security forces neutralised 14 terrorists during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in North Waziristan, the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), announced on Wednesday.
According to the ISPR, the operation was launched in the Datta Khel area following credible intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists linked to the Indian-backed proxy group “Fitna al Khwarij.” After a fierce exchange of fire, security forces successfully eliminated all 14 militants.
“Sanitisation operations are underway to clear the area of any remaining Indian-sponsored terrorists,” the statement added.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended the security forces for their swift and effective action, stating, “The nefarious designs of terrorists and enemies of humanity will be crushed. We are committed to completely eradicating terrorism with the help of our professional armed forces.”
The North Waziristan operation comes a day after another IBO in Balochistan’s Mach area, where five militants linked to Indian interests were also killed.
These operations form part of a nationwide crackdown on terrorism amid a recent uptick in militant activity. Data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) shows a 5% rise in attacks in May 2025, compared to April.
According to PICSS, 85 militant attacks were recorded in May, up from 81 the previous month. These incidents claimed 113 lives, including:
- 52 security personnel
- 46 civilians
- 11 militants
- 4 peace committee members
In addition, 182 people were injured, including:
- 130 civilians (up 145% from April)
- 47 security personnel
- 4 militants
- 1 peace committee member
While the increase in overall attacks was modest, the 73% spike in security personnel fatalities underscores the enduring threat facing Pakistan’s armed forces. The sharp rise in civilian injuries also reflects a growing impact on the general public.
In May alone, 59 militants were killed during security operations, while five security personnel lost their lives. Authorities also arrested 52 suspects and injured seven militants and five personnel in ongoing IBOs.
The government and military leadership maintain that the fight against terrorism remains a top priority, with operations continuing until the menace is fully eradicated.
