RAWALPINDI: Two major infrastructure projects in Rawalpindi — the Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road and the GPO Underpass on The Mall — are set to open to the public following Eid ul Azha. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is expected to formally inaugurate the projects after the holidays.
Originally scheduled for inauguration earlier this week, the opening was delayed due to the chief minister’s engagements in Lahore. Authorities have since decided to open both the flyover and underpass on the same day after Eid.
The Nawaz Sharif Flyover, constructed at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road, was launched in January with a budget of Rs2.113 billion. Measuring 1,915 feet in length, 52 feet in width, and standing 16.75 feet high, the flyover is designed to significantly ease traffic congestion in the area and is expected to benefit approximately 79,000 vehicles daily.
Meanwhile, the GPO Double Barrel Underpass on The Mall is nearing completion. Spanning over one kilometre, from TM Chowk near GHQ to Military Hospital, the underpass is being constructed at a cost of Rs4.6 billion.
The project is a key component of the Punjab government’s broader initiative to make The Mall a signal-free corridor, aimed at facilitating smoother traffic flow for an estimated 250,000 vehicles daily.
