Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to attend the upcoming G7 summit in Canada, as he has not received an official invitation, Indian media reported. If confirmed, this will mark the first time in six years that India will be absent from the influential gathering of global leaders.
The summit is scheduled to be held in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17, with Canada playing host amid strained diplomatic ties with India. Relations between the two countries have soured following Canada’s accusations that Indian agents were involved in the assassination of a pro-Khalistan separatist leader on Canadian soil in 2023.
The controversy centers around the June 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and vocal supporter of the Khalistan movement. Ottawa publicly accused India of orchestrating the killing, sparking a diplomatic row that led to the expulsion of six Indian diplomats, including the head of mission.
In a further escalation, Canadian authorities in October 2024 alleged that Indian Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah—one of Modi’s closest allies—was behind broader efforts to target Sikh separatists overseas.
Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison told a parliamentary committee that Shah’s alleged involvement had been shared with a U.S.-based publication.
According to The Times of India and other local sources, Modi has yet to receive a formal invitation to the G7. India has attended every G7 summit since 2019, but this apparent exclusion reflects the deepening rift between New Delhi and Ottawa.
