ISLAMABAD: At least 216 prisoners escaped from Karachi’s Malir Jail during an evacuation triggered by earthquake tremors, Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah confirmed in the early hours of Wednesday.
Speaking to the media, Shah revealed that the jailbreak occurred Monday night when inmates from Circle No. 4 and 5 were temporarily moved out of their barracks as a precautionary measure. “Over 600 prisoners were outside their cells during the evacuation. Amid the confusion, 216 managed to flee,” he stated.
So far, more than 80 escapees have been recaptured, while search operations continue for the remaining 135 fugitives.
Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar called it one of the most serious jailbreaks in recent years. Addressing the media early Tuesday, he said that between 700 to 1,000 inmates had gathered near the prison’s main gate during the evacuation. Around 100 prisoners forced the gate open and escaped.
“About 46 were immediately rearrested, and we expect the rest to be brought back soon,” Lanjar said. He confirmed that all escapees have been identified, and targeted raids are being conducted at their homes and surrounding areas.
Lanjar also noted that initial reports of structural damage were ruled out; the escape occurred through the main gate rather than a breach in the prison walls. He hinted at possible staff negligence and announced that an inquiry committee would be formed comprising police and other relevant agencies. “Strict action will be taken against those found responsible,” he assured.
Inspector General Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon, who also visited the facility, stated that many of the escapees were involved in drug-related cases and suffer from psychological conditions, making them easier to track. He dismissed the possibility of a pre-planned breakout and praised the swift response by police and Rangers.
The incident resulted in injuries to three Frontier Corps personnel and one jail staff member, while one inmate reportedly died during the commotion.
A coordinated operation involving police, Rangers, Frontier Corps, the Special Security Unit (SSU), and the Rapid Response Force (RRF) was launched to capture the fugitives. Authorities have since regained full control of the jail.
