Liverpool Car Ramming
UK police have confirmed that the recent car ramming incident in Liverpool, which resulted in 27 people being hospitalized, is not being treated as an act of terrorism. The attack occurred during celebrations of Liverpool’s Premier League football title, when a vehicle drove into crowds gathered on Water Street.
At a press conference held on Monday, Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims described the event as “an isolated incident” and emphasized that authorities were not currently searching for anyone else connected to the attack.
Sims also revealed that a 53-year-old white British man, arrested shortly after the collision, is believed to be the driver of the vehicle.
David Kitchen from the North West Ambulance Service expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating that emergency responders were “horrified and saddened” by the events.
He confirmed that 27 victims were taken to various hospitals in Liverpool, with two sustaining serious injuries, including one child. Kitchen praised the swift and professional response of paramedics, clinicians, and medical teams who arrived quickly to assist the injured.
The police’s prompt identification of the suspect has been noted by observers as a deliberate move to avoid confusion and misinformation, lessons drawn from previous incidents in the UK. Last summer, a stabbing attack at a children’s dance class in Southport tragically killed three young girls. In the aftermath, misinformation spread rapidly online, falsely attributing the crime to a Muslim migrant.
This led to widespread protests and violent riots across the region, fueled by far-right groups. Eventually, Axel Rudakubana, an 18-year-old Cardiff-born individual, was charged in connection with that case.
The delay in clarifying facts in the Southport incident allowed far-right misinformation to dominate the narrative, exacerbating tensions nationwide. This time, Liverpool police acted decisively and transparently to prevent similar unrest by quickly sharing accurate information and avoiding speculative or inflammatory statements. Their approach aimed to maintain public calm and trust amid a tragic event affecting the local community.
