The National Cyber Emergency Response Team (PKCERT) has issued an urgent high-priority alert for all social media users regarding a significant data breach involving major digital platforms, including Google, Microsoft, and Facebook.
According to PKCERT, over 1.8 billion records linked to various social media applications have been compromised, including approximately 184 million verified passwords. This breach poses a serious risk to user privacy and account security.
In light of this alarming development, PKCERT has strongly advised users to take immediate steps to secure their digital presence. Users are encouraged to change the passwords of all sensitive applications and online accounts without delay. The team further stressed the importance of activating two-factor authentication (2FA) to add an extra layer of security to personal and professional accounts.
The alert also cautioned the public against clicking on suspicious or unfamiliar links, which could further jeopardize personal data. Users are advised to remain vigilant and regularly review their account activity for any unusual or unauthorized access.
Cybersecurity authorities are closely monitoring the evolving situation and have called on the public to follow best practices to mitigate the risk of exploitation.
This isn’t the first time PKCERT has issued a cybersecurity warning. In December 2024, the agency released an advisory highlighting a critical vulnerability in Microsoft’s Windows operating system. The flaw, which affected versions 7 through 11, had the potential to allow hackers to steal credentials, domain names, and other personal information—often without requiring users to even open infected files.
The advisory at the time urged users to be cautious when handling shared drives, email attachments, or folders. PKCERT had also emphasized the importance of creating complex, unique passwords and regularly updating them to reduce security risks.
The latest breach serves as a strong reminder of the growing threats in the digital landscape and the urgent need for cybersecurity awareness and proactive action.
