Pakistan’s electricity generation surged by 22% year-on-year in April 2025, reaching 10,513 GWh compared to 8,639 GWh in April 2024, according to data released by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
On a month-on-month basis, power output also rose sharplyโby 25%โfrom 8,409 GWh in March 2025.
During the first ten months of the current fiscal year (10MFY25), cumulative electricity production amounted to 100,661 GWh, which is largely unchanged from the 100,088 GWh generated during the same period last year (10MFY24).
Generation from local coal and hydropower showed significant year-on-year increases of 73% and 11%, respectively. Meanwhile, nuclear and gas-based generation declined by 8% and 14%, respectively, and solar saw a modest rise of 2%. RLNG-based generation remained stable.
In terms of contribution, hydropower led electricity production in April with a 21.9% share. RLNG followed at 20.5%, nuclear at 17.9%, local coal at 14.5%, and natural gas at 8%.
On a cumulative basis for 10MFY25, hydropower remained the top contributor to the national power mix, holding a 29.5% share. It was followed by nuclear energy at 18.9%, RLNG at 17.7%, local coal at 12.5%, and gas at 9.3%.
