ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari has reiterated Pakistan’s strong commitment to the timely completion of the CASA-1000 power transmission project, describing it as a cornerstone for regional cooperation and energy connectivity.
Participating virtually in the Intergovernmental Council meeting of the CASA-1000 initiative, Leghari stressed the project’s strategic significance in linking the power grids of Central and South Asia, calling it “a bridge for regional harmony, development, and unity.”
Leghari emphasized that Pakistan stands ready to export surplus electricity to partner nations during the winter months via the CASA-1000 network, reinforcing the country’s role in promoting regional energy stability.
Highlighting the government’s focus on energy reforms under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the minister noted that CASA-1000 remains a top priority as part of Pakistan’s long-term vision for energy security and regional prosperity.
However, Leghari also voiced concern over project delays, urging the World Bank to address the financial implications resulting from these setbacks. He proposed launching technical-level talks with regional partners on implementing a Reverse Power mechanism, which would allow electricity to flow from South Asia to Central Asia during periods of surplus.
“Despite bearing the logistical and financial burden of delays, Pakistan has maintained and protected key infrastructure to keep the project on track,” he stated, adding that Reverse Power trade could serve as a catalyst for enhanced cooperation and economic interdependence in the region.
Leghari concluded by affirming that CASA-1000’s success is vital for regional energy security, and would play a transformative role in deepening economic integration between Central and South Asia.
