Key Talks
Tรผrkiyeโs Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is hosting crucial diplomatic talks in Istanbul this Friday, bringing together delegations from the United States, Russia, and Ukraine in a high-stakes effort to de-escalate ongoing tensions. According to Turkish foreign ministry sources, the talks commenced on Thursday at the historic Dolmabahce Palace with a meeting between Fidan and the Russian delegation.
The discussions will continue with the participation of key representatives: the US delegation will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Ukraineโs delegation by Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, and Russiaโs by Presidential Advisor Vladimir Medinsky. Although the precise format of the meeting remains undecided, all parties have expressed their willingness to engage in direct dialogue aimed at addressing the conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced earlier that he had decided to send a Ukrainian delegation to Istanbul to hold direct negotiations with the Russian side. He emphasized that Rustem Umerov would head the Ukrainian delegation.
Zelenskyyโs decision to send the delegation, despite the relatively low-level Russian representation, reflects his desire to show respect for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, US President Donald Trump, and the Turkish governmentโs mediation efforts. Zelenskyy also highlighted that this step was taken with the hope of initiating a process toward de-escalation and, ultimately, peace, even if the Ukrainian delegation is not attending at full strength.
Before departing Tรผrkiye, Zelenskyy met with President Erdogan at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, underlining the importance of Turkeyโs role as a mediator. His delegation will remain in Istanbul through Friday to participate fully in the ongoing talks.
Meanwhile, Vladimir Medinsky, who heads the Russian delegation, spoke at a press conference in Istanbul, affirming that his team holds full authority to discuss all necessary issues related to resolving the conflict.
Medinsky confirmed that the delegation was appointed by a presidential decree and prepared through direct consultations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He expressed optimism, stating that the objective of these negotiations is to achieve long-term peace, and urged all sides to adopt a constructive approach to find common ground.
As tensions continue in the region, the diplomatic meeting in Istanbul represents a critical opportunity for dialogue, with Tรผrkiye playing a central role in facilitating peace efforts between the warring parties.
