Southern Punjab, including the city of Multan, is currently facing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 43ยฐC, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The extreme weather has triggered a notable rise in heat-related illnesses, particularly gastroenteritis.
Health officials at Nishtar Hospital report that over 120 patients sought treatment for gastroenteritis in the past 24 hours alone. A hospital spokesperson confirmed that most patients received immediate care and were discharged shortly afterward. In response to the growing number of cases, a dedicated ward for gastroenteritis patients has been established at the hospital.
The Meteorological Department has cautioned that the ongoing heatwave could result in an increase in heat stroke incidents across the region. Medical professionals are urging the public to take preventive steps to protect their health during this period of intense heat.
Dr. Javed Akram, a leading medical expert, stressed the importance of recognizing heat stroke symptoms and adopting safety measures. โStay hydrated by drinking water regularly, especially when outdoors. Use umbrellas or head coverings to shield yourself from direct sunlight,โ he advised.
Doctors also recommend limiting outdoor activity during peak daytime hours and increasing fluid intake to stay cool and prevent dehydration.
With the heatwave expected to persist in the coming days, hospitals throughout the region remain on high alert to manage the rising number of heat-related illnesses.
