ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government has begun preparations to revive the Basant festival in Lahore next year, with a strong emphasis on safety and regulation, sources revealed.
Acting on the directives of Chief Minister Punjab, a high-level committee has been formed to oversee arrangements for the festival, tentatively scheduled for two days in February. Lahore’s inner city is expected to host the main celebrations.
To prevent accidents, authorities are considering a two-day ban on motorcycles during the event.
Officials are developing comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure public safety. Under the proposed guidelines, the sale and purchase of kites and string will only be allowed through vendors registered with the district administration. Kite makers will also need to obtain registration.
Use of glass-coated or other hazardous threads will be strictly prohibited. All threads will undergo inspection by the district administration to confirm compliance with safety standards.
Violators of the SOPs will face strict action, officials warned. The government aims to celebrate Basant with cultural vibrancy while prioritizing public safety—avoiding the tragic incidents that have marred previous celebrations.
