ISLAMABAD: Umar Akmal has voiced strong support for Babar Azam amid criticism over his recent batting form but advised that the former national captain should step down as Peshawar Zalmi’s skipper in the HBL Pakistan Super League to focus on regaining his batting rhythm.
Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Akmal defended Babar’s place in the national team, saying, “Yes, he’s going through a rough patch, but he remains Pakistan’s finest batsman. He led the national side with pride for five years. Form is temporary, but class is permanent.”
Drawing a parallel with India’s Virat Kohli, Akmal suggested that Babar should take a complete two-month break from cricket to reset mentally and physically. He recommended Babar speak with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, the chief selector, and the current captain to request this rest period.
Akmal further advised Babar to step aside from PSL captaincy to ease the pressure and allow himself to enjoy the game again. “The way PCB removed him as national captain, he should also leave franchise captaincy behind. It’ll help him bat with freedom,” he said.
He also pointed to Sahibzada Farhan’s recent success, attributing it to being used in his preferred role. Akmal believes Babar could similarly thrive if allowed to play without added responsibilities and public pressure, which he feels are currently affecting his performance.
