Tragic Collision: Woman Dies in Bus-Motorcycle Accident in Karachi

Tragic Collision

KARACHI: A tragic road accident in Karachi claimed the life of a woman on Monday when a bus collided with a motorcycle in the Orangi Town No. 5 area, police reported.

The woman’s body was transferred to a nearby hospital for medico-legal procedures, while authorities quickly arrested the bus driver and registered a case against him.

This latest incident brings the total number of fatalities due to bus collisions in Karachi this year to 10. It also adds to the growing concerns over the rising number of deaths caused by traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles across the city.

According to data, 85 people have lost their lives in accidents involving heavy vehicles in just the first 104 days of the year — an alarming figure that has sparked public outrage and prompted calls for urgent reform.

In response to the increasing toll, citizens have taken to the streets in protest, sometimes resorting to extreme actions. In recent days, there have been several instances where angry mobs set fire to heavy vehicles following fatal accidents.

Just last week in North Karachi, dumper trucks were torched by locals after a speeding dumper ran over two motorcyclists. Similarly, on Sunday, another incident in Gulshan-e-Iqbal near Disco Bakery saw a mob setting a vehicle ablaze after it was involved in an accident that resulted in a fatality.

Law enforcement responded swiftly, arresting the driver and three others on the scene. Several individuals involved in the torching of the vehicle were also taken into custody.

Amid mounting pressure and worsening public safety conditions, the Sindh government has imposed a daytime ban on the movement of heavy vehicles within Karachi. Authorities have also enforced a strict 30-kilometre-per-hour speed limit for all heavy transport vehicles operating in the city.

Despite these measures, dangerous driving behavior persists. In a separate incident on Sunday morning at Sea View near Darakhshan, a car reportedly drifting at high speed overturned and plunged into the sea.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and Rescue 1122 teams successfully retrieved the vehicle. The police have summoned the car owner for further investigation.

The recent spate of accidents underscores the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better driver education to curb the growing menace of reckless driving in Karachi.
