TikTok has rolled out major updates to its Family Pairing feature, offering parents greater control over their teens’ digital activities while promoting safer and healthier online habits for younger users.
These improvements underline TikTokโs commitment to fostering a secure digital environment and supporting family engagement in teen online behavior.
The new tools include the ability for parents to set customized screen-free timesโsuch as during school hours, at night, or on weekends. Although teens can request additional screen time, parents retain final approval.
Increased visibility into teensโ activity is also part of the update. Parents will now be able to view who their child follows, who follows them, and which users theyโve blocked, helping to facilitate open and constructive conversations about online safety.
Soon, teens who report content for violating community guidelines will have the option to alert a trusted adult, even if Family Pairing isnโt turned on.
The updated Family Pairing suite now includes more than 15 customizable options for privacy, safety, and digital wellness, empowering families to tailor the TikTok experience to their needs.
Promoting Healthy Digital Habits
To encourage better screen-time practices, TikTok is introducing a Wind-Down feature for users under 16. After 10 PM, their For You feed will shift to display relaxing music and fullscreen prompts urging them to log off.
If teens continue to scroll, more persistent reminders will appear. Early data shows a majority of teens keep these features enabled, demonstrating their impact. TikTok also plans to test guided meditation tools in the coming weeks, based on research linking mindfulness to improved sleep.
A TikTok representative stated, โOur mission is to foster a safe and inspiring environment for young users. These updates reflect our dedication to family safety, digital well-being, and transparent controls that empower parents and teens alike.โ
Collaborating on Global Digital Safety Standards
TikTok continues to partner with global organizations to raise digital safety standards and reinforce age-appropriate experiences. Using technologies like machine learning, the platform actively prevents underage users (under 13) from accessing the app.
Through partnerships such as one with Telefรณnica, TikTok is exploring mobile-based age verification methods. The platform is also working closely with groups like the Center for Information Policy Leadership and WeProtect Global Alliance to advance best practices for online safety across the tech industry.
