Power Division
The Power Division has officially responded to circulating rumours regarding changes in electricity tariffs, asserting that the federal government is fully committed to implementing the recently announced relief in power prices.
Spokesperson for the Power Division, Zafaryab Khan, addressed these speculations in an interview with the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), dismissing the reports as baseless, misleading, and contradictory to the government’s actual stance.
According to Zafaryab Khan, certain elements are deliberately spreading misinformation about electricity tariffs and technical matters to distort public perception and create confusion.
He stressed that such efforts are not only misleading but are also undermining the governmentโs transparent approach towards managing energy prices. โThese reports misrepresent the governmentโs official position and are aimed at creating confusion among the public,โ he said.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the spokesperson clarified that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharifโs announcement regarding the reduction in electricity rates is not only accurate but is also being implemented as planned.
He added that the Prime Minister, keeping in view the rising temperatures and increasing electricity demand during the summer season, had instructed the Power Division to take immediate action to provide relief to consumers.
As a result, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) held a public hearing on April 4 to discuss and advance the implementation of the relief package.
Following this, the federal cabinet gave its formal approval, allowing the relief measures to be extended across all power distribution companies in the country.
Zafaryab Khan highlighted that the implementation of this package is the result of months of hard work and negotiations, particularly with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), to bring down tariffs and make electricity more affordable for the public.
He dismissed any ongoing debate about tariff categories as irrelevant at this point, noting that the relief measures have already been set in motion.
โThe government deserves credit for this timely and people-centric intervention,โ he concluded, assuring the public that the relief in electricity prices is genuine, approved, and being effectively rolled out nationwide.
