Residents of Karachi are expected to face scorching temperatures reaching up to 40°C on Sunday, as hot and dry weather continues to affect the city and much of Sindh, according to the latest forecast by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The PMD has warned that Karachi will remain under intense heat for at least the next three days. Strong, gusty winds are also expected to sweep through the city on Sunday and Monday, adding to the discomfort.
This forecast follows a noticeable increase in temperatures over the past week. The PMD had earlier predicted highs between 37°C and 39°C for Friday and Saturday, which materialized as heatwave conditions strengthened.
On Tuesday, Karachi recorded a high of 38.1°C, with 53% humidity and light northerly winds, highlighting the growing severity of the heat.
Chief Meteorologist Muhammad Afzal noted that a continued upward trend in temperatures is likely across Pakistan in the coming months. He attributed part of this surge to the urban heat island effect in major cities like Karachi. According to Afzal, national temperatures could stay 2°C to 3°C above normal, while Karachi may experience spikes of up to 4°C beyond the seasonal average.
He also warned that such prolonged heat could elevate drought risks and disrupt daily life, especially in urban areas.
In response, the PMD has advised residents to adopt precautionary measures. These include staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and conserving water to reduce pressure on local infrastructure and resources.
