The US State Department has approved the first-ever sale of Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) to Saudi Arabia, with an estimated price tag of $100 million.
Details of the Approved Sale
The APKWS is a laser-guided rocket capable of striking both airborne and surface targets with high precision. The weapon, priced at around $22,000 per unit, is considered a cost-effective solution for countering low-cost armed drones, such as those used by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
In a statement, the Pentagon noted:
“The proposed sale will enhance Saudi Arabia’s ability to address current and future threats while minimizing collateral damage compared to other guided missile systems.”
Congress Notified of Potential Sale
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) formally notified Congress about the potential sale of 2,000 APKWS rockets, along with associated equipment and training.
The Pentagon emphasized that the sale aligns with US foreign policy and national security objectives, strengthening the security of a key Gulf ally that contributes to regional political stability and economic progress.
Despite the State Department’s approval, the notification does not confirm that a contract has been signed or that negotiations have been finalized. The primary contractor for the deal will be BAE Systems.
Context: US Military Actions in Yemen
The approval comes amid ongoing US airstrikes targeting Houthi forces in Yemen. Since last Saturday, the US has carried out a series of strikes, killing at least 31 people—marking the largest such operation since Donald Trump returned to the White House in January.
