DADU, Sindh: Authorities in Dadu have filed cases against over 34 social media users for allegedly spreading false news and rumors about bomb blasts in the city, an official confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ameer Saud Magsi, a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 against the accused individuals.
Crackdown on Misinformation
A spokesperson for the Dadu police stated that unidentified individuals were using social media to circulate false information, causing unnecessary panic. The police urged the public to verify information before sharing it online.
SSP Magsi clarified that while only 34 individuals had been named in the case, 30 raiding teams had been formed to apprehend the suspects.
“The spread of false news created unnecessary fear in the city,” he added.
Legal Action and FIA Involvement
Spreading false or misleading information is a criminal offense under Section 20 of the PECA Act, SSP Magsi warned. He further stated that a formal request had been sent to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for additional legal action.
The crackdown on misinformation comes amid a recent wave of terrorist attacks across Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
Similar Arrests in Islamabad
In a related development, on Monday, the FIA arrested a suspect in Islamabad for allegedly running an “anti-state campaign” on social media following the Jaffar Express train attack.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to countering fake news and misinformation, warning that strict legal measures will be taken against those responsible for spreading panic.
