Telegram Founder Durov
Telegram founder Pavel Durov has been granted permission to temporarily leave France, where he faces multiple charges related to allegedly enabling organized crime through his popular messaging platform. Sources confirmed to AFP that Durov, aged 40, departed France for Dubai on Saturday with the consent of French authorities.
Durov’s legal troubles began in August 2024 when he was dramatically detained at Le Bourget airport near Paris. He was charged with numerous infractions, including failing to prevent extremist and terrorist content on Telegram, which has over 900 million active users worldwide. His arrest marked the first instance of a social media platform founder being held accountable for content shared on their platform.
After days of intense interrogation, Durov was released on a €5 million ($5.6 million) bail. However, he was barred from leaving France while the investigation was underway. According to sources, an investigating judge recently approved Durov’s request to modify the conditions of his supervision, allowing him to leave France for “several weeks.”
Durov, who holds Russian, French, and United Arab Emirates citizenship, reportedly flew out from Le Bourget airport to Dubai, where Telegram is headquartered. A spokesperson for Telegram declined to comment on the matter, and Durov’s legal team was unavailable for immediate response.
During his questioning in December 2024, Durov initially criticized French authorities for failing to alert Telegram about illegal activities on the platform. However, he later acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations against him.
Investigators presented Durov with over a dozen cases involving criminal activities facilitated through Telegram, including child abuse, drug trafficking, scams, arms sales, and hiring hitmen.
French President Emmanuel Macron defended granting French citizenship to Durov, describing it as a “strategic” move to attract global tech talent. Meanwhile, Russia warned France against turning Durov’s case into “political persecution.”
Durov, known for his libertarian views and advocacy for online privacy, has faced criticism and support from various quarters. Elon Musk, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), expressed support for Durov by posting under the hashtag #FreePavel.
Durov’s arrest has sparked debate on freedom of speech and the responsibility of tech platforms in regulating content. Some argue that Durov should not be held accountable for user behavior on Telegram, while others believe his reluctance to implement stricter content moderation led to the platform becoming a hub for criminal activities.
With an estimated net worth of $15.5 billion, Durov is known for his minimalist lifestyle, which includes ice baths and abstaining from alcohol and coffee. Despite his wealth, he remains an enigmatic figure who rarely engages in public appearances.
As Durov temporarily leaves France, the legal battle surrounding his role in Telegram’s operations continues to raise questions about the balance between digital freedom and responsibility in the modern tech world.
