Höegh Aurora, the largest vehicle carrier in the world, is making significant waves in the maritime transport sector. Operated by Norway’s Höegh Autoliners, this massive Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) can transport up to 9,100 vehicles, surpassing the previous record by 600 cars. Built by China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI) in Jiangsu, China, the vessel spans 199.9 meters in length and 37.5 meters in width, making it the most spacious vessel of its kind. Equipped with 14 reinforced decks and advanced ramp systems, the Höegh Aurora is designed to carry both conventional and electric vehicles, positioning it for future adaptability as the automotive industry transitions toward electric vehicles (EVs).
Leading the Way in Sustainable Shipping
Beyond its impressive size, Höegh Aurora is also setting a new standard in eco-friendly shipping. The carrier boasts 1,500 square meters of solar panels, reducing generator-produced electricity by 30-35%. Additionally, it operates on a combination of liquefied natural gas (LNG), biofuels, and low-sulfur oil, significantly reducing carbon emissions.
Höegh Autoliners is committed to further advancing its sustainability efforts. By 2027, all 12 commissioned Aurora-class carriers will be powered by clean ammonia, a zero-carbon fuel, helping the company achieve its goal of net-zero emissions.
Redefining the Future of Maritime Transport
Sebjørn Dahl, COO of Höegh Autoliners, calls the Aurora Class the “crown jewel” of the company’s green fleet renewal program. “These vessels meet the growing demands of carbon-conscious customers who seek emission reductions and sustainable transportation,” he said.
With the Höegh Aurora leading the charge, the shipping industry is advancing toward a more sustainable future, proving that large-scale transportation and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
