ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s chances of reaching the semifinals of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 have significantly decreased after suffering their second consecutive defeat in the tournament.
The team now relies on the results of the remaining Group A matches to stay in contention for a semifinal spot.
Their hopes took a major hit following a disappointing six-wicket loss to arch-rivals India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
With two losses in as many matches, Pakistan’s qualification prospects are hanging by a thread, but they are still mathematically in the race. Led by Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan now depends on the outcome of the remaining three Group A fixtures.
Currently at the bottom of the group, Pakistan’s path to the semifinals starts with a Bangladesh win over New Zealand on February 24. Pakistan must then secure a big victory over Bangladesh on February 27 to boost their net run rate and earn vital points.
Following that, they’ll need India to defeat New Zealand, ensuring the Black Caps remain on two points with an inferior net run rate.
If all results align in Pakistan’s favor, both Pakistan and New Zealand would have two points, with the team having the better net run rate advancing to the semifinals alongside India.
