ISLAMABAD: A team of postgraduate students from NED University has unveiled a groundbreaking driverless electric vehicle, marking a significant innovation in Pakistan’s automotive industry.
The engineering students have successfully developed a self-driving car, a technology that has already been introduced globally but is a first for Pakistan. The vehicle is designed to independently navigate to any designated location, showcasing the country’s advancement in automation.
The students pointed out the challenges posed by Pakistan’s road conditions, noting that their vehicle is equipped to detect and respond to potholes and uneven surfaces, adapting to the unique terrain.
According to their faculty supervisor, the technology holds tremendous potential beyond local travel and could revolutionize intercity transportation. He further emphasized that the self-driving system could be adapted for heavy vehicles, buses, and coaches, potentially transforming the entire transportation sector in Pakistan.
This innovative achievement follows the 2021 development of Pakistanโs second Formula Electric Sports car by NED University students, which cost around Rs 3.5 million.
One of the students mentioned that creating Pakistan’s second Formula Electric car was a long-standing dream for the engineering department, inspired by the first electric sports car developed by NUST. With a top speed of 120 km/h and an average speed of 60-70 km/h, the car faced challenges, particularly with battery backup and motor selection, but was ultimately completed successfully.
