ISLAMABAD: Massive changes have shaken up the latest ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings, with India’s Shubman Gill and Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana rising to the top just before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Gill has dethroned former Pakistan captain Babar Azam to become the world’s No.1 ODI batter, while Theekshana claims the top spot in the bowling rankings, surpassing Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan for the first time.
This major reshuffle sets up an intriguing backdrop for the upcoming Champions Trophy, set to take place in Pakistan and Dubai.
Gill Reclaims No.1 ODI Batter Spot
This marks the second time Gill has held the No.1 ranking, having previously surpassed Babar during the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. His recent century against England in Ahmedabad during the third ODI propelled him to the top once again.
Babar now sits in second place, trailing Gill by 23 rating points, while India captain Rohit Sharma remains third, 45 points behind his fellow opener.
Theekshana Becomes No.1 ODI Bowler
Theekshana’s dominant performances against Australia on home soil, including a four-wicket haul in Colombo, have helped him leapfrog Rashid Khan in the ODI Bowling Rankings.
Although Sri Lanka will not feature in the Champions Trophy, Theekshana’s rise to the top is a significant milestone. Rashid, now in second place, is just 11 rating points behind and will be eager to reclaim the No.1 spot.
Other notable movers include India’s Kuldeep Yadav (up to fourth), South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj (re-entering at sixth), and New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner (rising to seventh).
All-Rounder Rankings
Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi remains the No.1 ODI all-rounder, while Santner moves up one place to secure the sixth spot.
With the Champions Trophy around the corner, the latest rankings shake-up adds an extra layer of excitement as the world’s best battle for supremacy.
