Karachiโs power consumers are likely to receive significant relief as K-Electric (KE) has filed a petition with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to reduce the power tariff by Rs4.95 per unit.
The proposed tariff cut comes as KE seeks to refund higher electricity rates charged in December 2024. Under the monthly fuel charges adjustment (FCA) for December, the utility plans to refund approximately Rs4.94 billion to its consumers.
NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing on February 26 to review KE’s request for a provisional negative FCA.
PM Shehbaz Sharif Promises More Reductions
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced further reductions in electricity tariffs for both domestic consumers and industries as part of ongoing reforms in the energy sector.
During a review meeting in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz expressed satisfaction with the progress of reforms, stating that they were yielding positive results. He reaffirmed his commitment to providing affordable and sustainable electricity, highlighting efforts to renegotiate agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), which he said were saving the national treasury and lowering electricity costs for consumers.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of combating power theft, pledging to intensify the campaign to eliminate distribution losses caused by theft and inefficiency across the country.
The reduction in electricity tariffs and ongoing reforms aim to ease the financial burden on consumers while ensuring long-term sustainability in the power sector.
