ISLAMABAD: Indiaโs preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 took an unexpected blow when bowling coach Morne Morkel left the team in Dubai and returned home for personal reasons. Though the precise cause of his departure remains unconfirmed, rumors suggest it may be due to the passing of his father.
Morkelโs exit raises concerns about Indiaโs bowling line-up, as Mohammed Shami is struggling with his form, and both Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana lack ODI experience.
The former South African cricketer, who had been serving as Indiaโs bowling coach since August, arrived in the UAE with the team on February 15 and attended training sessions at the ICC Academy on February 16. However, he was notably absent from the training on February 17 and is reported to have flown back to South Africa shortly thereafter.
It remains unclear whether Morkel will return in time for the tournament.
Indiaโs bowling concerns are now heightened, especially with the absence of Jasprit Bumrah from the squad. With Shamiโs form uncertain, and Morkelโs departure, Indiaโs bowling attack faces significant challenges as they prepare for their match against Bangladesh on February 20. The team, led by Rohit Sharma, is scheduled to resume training on February 19 after a planned break.
