Renowned Indian filmmaker, director, and actress Nandita Das has criticized the persistent pay disparity in Bollywood, highlighting that female actors consistently earn less than their male counterparts.
Speaking on Aaj TVโs program Spotlight with host Munizae Jahangir, Das stated, โDeepika Padukone will always earn less than Shah Rukh Khan. Even an A-list male actor wonโt accept the same payment as an A-list female actor.โ
Das explained that her background in social work has shaped her perspective on these issues. Unlike many in the film industry, she revealed that she did not grow up watching movies. Reflecting on her experiences in Pakistan, she said, โI receive immense love and respect there.โ
The acclaimed actress and director also spoke about her deep connection to the Indian film Arth, calling it โvery close to my heart.โ
However, Das revealed that portraying bold characters in various films has exposed her to serious threats.
Discussing global peace, she emphasized the importance of creating a world where โeveryone is treated with equal dignity.โ While acknowledging that such harmony may take โseveral generationsโ to achieve, she stressed the need for continuous efforts, saying, โThere can be no peace without justice.โ
Das also expressed her admiration for legendary writer Saadat Hasan Manto. โI have read Manto, and he was an extraordinary man. His habits reminded me of my father. Thatโs when I decided to make a film about him,โ she shared.
Despite her celebrated career, Das admitted that acting was never her true passion. โI accepted many film roles reluctantly. Now, Iโm often offered repetitive characters, while younger actresses get better opportunities,โ she said.
She concluded by saying that challenges are universal and must be faced head-on.
