The much-anticipated international freight train service connecting Pakistan to Russia is slated to begin trial operations on March 15, 2025. This service is expected to significantly enhance regional trade connectivity with Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia.
Pakistan Railway Freight Transportation Company (PRFTC), a subsidiary of Pakistan Railways, is spearheading the initiative and has reached out to the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) to secure containerized cargo commitments for the trial phase. The freight service will operate from the Qasim International Container Terminal and Pakistan International Container Terminal, offering container capacities of 22 tonnes (T.E.U) and 44 tonnes (F.E.U).
In a letter to the FPCCI, PRFTC requested the coordination of stakeholders to ensure smooth operations by providing information on available containerized cargo for export. Officials involved in the project highlighted the importance of this rail link, calling it a significant advancement in regional trade infrastructure. The Taftan station in Pakistan will serve as a key entry point for goods moving along the international route. Issues related to the deployment of customs officials at the Taftan station are close to resolution.
The new freight rail service is expected to reshape trade dynamics in the region by facilitating the flow of various commodities between Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia. Russia will be able to export oil, natural gas, steel, and industrial goods directly to Pakistan, while Pakistani exporters will benefit from better access to markets in Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia for textiles, food products, and agricultural goods like rice, wheat, and cotton.
This initiative follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Railways at the 27th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June 2024, which paved the way for the launch of this transformative trade route.
