Meta Platforms has announced the creation of a dedicated robotics division within its Reality Labs unit, focusing on the development of AI-powered humanoid robots designed to assist with physical tasks. This initiative highlights Meta’s increasing emphasis on robotics and artificial intelligence.
In an internal memo, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth outlined that the newly formed robotics product group would focus on research and development of “consumer humanoid robots” aimed at maximizing the capabilities of Llama, the company’s core AI foundation model.
Llama serves as the backbone for various generative AI applications across Meta’s platforms, and the new division aims to extend its functionalities into robotics.
The division will be led by Marc Whitten, a former CEO of self-driving car company Cruise. Bosworth confirmed that Whitten has been appointed as Meta’s Vice President of Robotics.
This latest move reflects Meta’s broader vision of integrating AI into next-generation automation technologies, potentially transforming consumer interactions with intelligent machines.
