ISLAMABAD: Pakistan batter Babar Azam’s recent struggles have sparked discussions about his role as an opener for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled from February 19 to March 9.
Coaching Staff Supports Babar’s Promotion
Interim head coach Aqib Javed defended the decision to promote Babar to the opening position, expressing confidence that he will perform well in crucial matches. After Pakistan’s five-wicket loss to New Zealand in the tri-nation ODI series final, Javed explained the reasoning behind the move.
He stated that during the away series against South Africa, a right-hand batter had to face the first over in every game. When Saim Ayub got injured, Babar had to open in Tests as well. He added that the pitches are not troubling batters early on, and the management wanted their best batter to make full use of the powerplay.
Despite Pakistan winning only one match in the tri-nation series, Javed remained hopeful that the squad is well-prepared for the upcoming tournament.
Former Cricketers Oppose the Move
Many former players, including Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Hafeez, have criticized Babar’s shift to the top order, pointing out his struggles in recent matches.
In the tri-nation final against New Zealand, Babar had disappointing scores of 10, 23, and 29. Mohammad Amir believes that Babar is better suited for the number three position, where he can build an innings effectively.
Amir compared Babar’s batting position to his own role as a bowler, saying that just as he needs to bowl with the new ball to be effective, Babar’s strength is at number three, where he can construct an innings properly.
Mohammad Hafeez also suggested that Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, or Shan Masood should partner Fakhar Zaman as openers, allowing Babar to return to his usual position. He wrote on social media that keeping Babar at number three would make things easier for the team.
Herschelle Gibbs’ Comments on Babar
Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs, who previously coached Babar in the Pakistan Super League, also commented on Babar’s playing style and communication skills.
When a fan asked Gibbs on social media if he had given Babar any advice, Gibbs responded that language was a barrier, making it difficult to communicate with him. He added that Babar’s batting style and approach have remained unchanged, despite the evolving nature of international cricket.
Babar’s Record at Number Three
Historically, Babar has performed well at number three, scoring 5,416 runs in 104 matches at an average of 60.17 and a strike rate of 88.33, with 19 centuries and 29 half-centuries.
As the Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, the Pakistan team management faces an important decision—whether to continue with Babar as an opener or revert him to his more successful number three position.
