SINDH: The Sindh Transport Department has announced a 60% increase in the fares for the People’s Bus Service across the province, set to take effect on February 1. The hike has raised concerns among passengers who are already grappling with the impact of inflation.
Under the new fare structure, the minimum fare has been increased from Rs50 to Rs80. For journeys over 15 kilometres, the fare will now be Rs120, a sharp rise from the previous flat rate of Rs50.
The decision has sparked criticism from commuters, many of whom depend on the People’s Bus Service for affordable daily travel. Passengers have voiced their frustration, saying the fare increase will add to their financial burden during an already difficult economic period.
“Previously, I could travel for Rs50, but now I’ll have to pay Rs120 for the same trip. This additional cost is tough to manage, especially with the ongoing rise in prices,” said one concerned commuter.
The People’s Bus Service has long been seen as an affordable and reliable transport option for Sindh’s residents, but this fare hike is expected to make it less accessible, particularly for lower-income groups.
