The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has delayed the announcement of this year’s Oscar nominations for a second time due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, organizers announced on Monday.
The nominations for the film industry’s most prestigious awards will now be revealed on January 23, moving from the previously scheduled date of January 19.
“Given the continuing wildfires in the Los Angeles area, we believe it is essential to extend our voting period and reschedule the nomination announcement to provide additional time for our members,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang in a statement.
Additionally, the Academy has canceled the annual Oscar nominees’ luncheon, which was set for February 10.
Despite these changes, the Academy Awards telecast is still slated for March 2.
In contrast, the organizers of the Grammy Awards confirmed that the music industry’s honors will proceed as planned on February 2. However, this year’s ceremony will carry a renewed sense of purpose, with a focus on raising additional funds for wildfire relief efforts and honoring the courage and dedication of first responders. “We will celebrate the bravery of those who risk their lives to protect us,” said Recording Academy officials in a letter to members.
