ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia’s private budget airline is set to launch low-cost operations in Pakistan, offering flights between Karachi, Lahore, Jeddah, and Riyadh.
Having entered the aviation sector in 2021, the airline aims to provide economical travel options, with a focus on affordability. It previously conducted trial budget flights for Hajj pilgrims in Pakistan last year and now plans to expand its services to cater to a broader audience.
The airline will operate Hajj and Umrah flights twice a week from Karachi to Jeddah and Riyadh, while flights from Lahore to the same destinations will run on alternate days.
Features of Budget Airlines
Budget airlines prioritize affordability by offering only economy-class seating and excluding extras such as meals, luggage, and preferred seating, which are available for an additional fee. To minimize costs, these carriers often focus on shorter routes and operate through cost-effective secondary airports.
Local Response and Challenges
The entry of Saudi Arabia’s budget airline has drawn mixed reactions from Pakistan’s travel industry.
Mohsin Malik, a travel consultant, remarked, “Every new airline entering Pakistan initially offers competitive deals, but fares tend to align with those of local airlines over time as demand increases.”
Muhammad Amin Khan, representing the Tours and Travels Agent Association, emphasized the importance of affordability for pilgrims. “No airline in Pakistan currently operates as a true budget carrier. Added costs for food and luggage may limit accessibility for poor pilgrims. We urge the government to consider subsidies or special fares for Hajj and Umrah travellers.”
Key to Success
The success of Saudi Arabia’s budget airline in Pakistan will depend on its ability to maintain low fares, provide reliable services, and build trust among passengers. If successful, the airline could become a valuable option for cost-conscious travellers, including those journeying for religious purposes.
